What the history of the Internet tells us about Bitcoin

The development of the Internet can be outlined as a sequence of protocols. Each of these protocols incurred disruption in the analog world. The most recent is the Bitcoin protocol.

The SMTP protocol enabled users to send e-mails via the Internet and revolutionized surface mail. The http protocol created the Web and had disruptive effects on media and advertising. This was followed by the SSL protocol and the emergence of online and e-commerce, with considerable consequences for retailing, before the RTSP protocol created streaming and revolutionized the entertainment industry. The Bitcoin protocol is the next step, and is set to completely transform the financial industry. Based on these developments, a current Forbes article explains exactly why Bitcoin is so groundbreaking.
